Every time I read about what is coming I get a little bit anxious. I come from a traditional teaching, that I hated by the way, so I am used to having clear steps to follow and to know the expected outcome.
While I was reading the eBook COVA’s first three chapters, my mind was wondering how I could have incorporated an authentic learning environment when I was teaching two-digit addition to my second graders this past week. I started to visualize a store or something like that. The more I read about CSLE + COVA the more I like it, but I still have a hard time imagining how to become an effective teacher transitioning from a presenter to a facilitator to a coach and finally to a mentor.
How can I teach to these 7 years old kids’ minds to learn how to learn?
I am excited about the process. I know it will require a lot of growth and experimentation. For now, I will follow and learn during the journey, the seven steps that the authors mention in this book:
1. Start with the bigger picture
2. Motivate a learned-centered environment where student learn how to learn and where the growth mindset is the foundation
3. Transition from a presenter to a facilitator to a coach to a mentor
4. Know what is my why
5. Use backward designs and plan with the end in mind to create a significant learning environment
6. Provide as many authentic learning opportunities as I can
7. Guide the discovery that is important to the learner where they have choice, ownership, voice, and it is authentic
