Aligning Outcomes, Assessment, and Activities
Aligning Oucomes: About
This week has been interesting because we had to create a course that fits in our innovation plan. In order to do this, first we learned what a BHAG is. The BHAG is a Big Hairy Audacious Goal and immediately I imagined a big monster. According to Braithwaite (2016) it has to be hairy to have lots of loose threads or unknowns. You find the BHAG by thinking who the learner will be at the end of the course, and it is like the why of your course. Personally, I think the planet has some significant problems, and it is one of my big interests. I always plan special activities for Earth Day with my students and this year it is on April 22nd. That is why I came up with the idea of instead of only having one day to celebrate the Earth, giving the students a complete course to work on topics that are affecting our planet. I will have to have in mind that I am working with 9 and 10 years old so this project will have to be kids friendly.
Then, I completed the Learning Environment & Situational Factors to Consider and it really helped me to put my ideas together and start visualizing what I really wanted for my students. At the beginning, I wanted a more open project where the students could learn about anything they wanted, but after completing this document I confirmed that it would be more beneficial if I give them more guidance on this first project so they have an overview of what to do for future independent projects. Next, I completed the Questions for Formulating Significant Learning Goals. This document has questions that guided me in my thinking process to have a more clear idea of what each section is about. They helped me structure the learning outcomes for my students on every step of the map.

After I was finished with those three steps, I was ready to start mapping my course. This mapping is important so that the students and I don’t lose focus of where we have to go and what we have to accomplish during each step. It is clear to me that with this course I want to guide them to connect the dots so I need to have the map of how to mentor them through this adventure.

With this project I am looking to give my students the abilities to make decisions, take risks, work collaboratively, think critically, be creative, have an effective communication, and be flexible. I want to empower them to not be afraid to make mistakes and follow their interests. I know this is the first time they are involved in this kind of learning so they might get frustrated but I hope that at the end they will be proud of all of their accomplishments.
